Task to be performed for being effective leader:
No leader can exist without
followers. In other words, by definition, a leader needs followers in order to
lead. This means that skills in leading and managing people are absolutely
crucial for effective leaders.
This section of therefore
examines some of those skills, explaining the art of successful delegation, how
to create a motivational environment and motivate others, and how to facilitate
processes. The section also covers the tasks required to be performed for being
effective leader.
Leaders do need to develop a
clear vision for their organization. But a key element of any leadership role
is deciding on the direction of travel, whether of an organization or a team,
and then identifying how to get there, and making sure it happens.
01 - Organizing Skills:
Anyone who has ever thought ‘I
really need to get organized’ could benefit from this section.
Poor organization can lead to
missed opportunities and lower productivity. Fortunately, it is relatively easy
to take a number of simple steps to get and stay organized.
Our page on Organizing
Skills suggests seven steps, including being clear about what you need to
do, deciding when you are going to do it, and perhaps most importantly, staying
on top of things.
02 - Strategic Thinking and
Planning:
Strategic thinking and action
planning are sometimes viewed as a bit of a ‘mystic art’, the ‘black box’ of
leadership.
But in fact, strategic thinking
and action planning are no more or less than working out where you are, where
you need to be and how you are going to close the gap between the two. Our page
on Strategic Thinking describes the process of developing a strategic
plan, including how to avoid the trap of the ‘Miracle Box’—as in, in this area;
a miracle happens that means that we can achieve our aims.
Our page on Action
Planning sets out how to translate a strategic plan into a set of clear
actions, all the responsibility of a particular individual, to ensure that your
strategy will be delivered.
03 - Managing Risk:
Risk management is otherwise
known as the art of working out what could possibly go wrong, and doing
something about it.
Like strategic thinking, it is
often viewed as a black art, but again, it is actually fairly straightforward.
The key is to be clear about how catastrophic and/or likely any particular risk
is, and focus your attention on those that are most likely to cause the most
problems. Our page on Risk Management explains more.
04- Getting and Keeping Things
on Track:
Planning and organizing are all
about getting, and keeping, everything on track. Whether that is a small or
large formal project, or the strategic direction of an entire organization, it
is a key leadership role.
05- Delegating Work:
Being able to pass work to
others, and achieve through them, is crucial to success as a leader.
No leader can do everything
themselves. Anyone who tries to do so will both struggle, and also find that
they lose their team in very short order.
Our page on Delegation
Skills explains that the key to successful delegation is to understand the
level of control that you want, and then to communicate that very clearly to
your subordinates. It explains that there are nine possible levels of
delegation: success comes from both parties understanding which is in use.
06 - Motivating Others
Everyone is motivated. The key to
leadership is to persuade others to want what you want.
Our page on Motivation
Skills explains what motivates people. It also suggests how you can help
to motivate others, including providing interesting and stimulating work, and
setting challenging goals.
There are three
important elements: showing how much you appreciate others, helping them to see
the big picture, and encouraging them to improve and develop their skills.
